Wedge Wire: The Profiled Wire at the Heart of Industrial Filtration

Company culture & Innovations

In filtration and separation processes, success often comes down to just a few tenths of a millimetre. This is where wedge wire, also known as triangular profile wire, comes into play. Behind this seemingly simple component lies a highly precise geometry that is essential for manufacturing the screens and filter elements used in water treatment, mining, oil & gas, and the food processing industry.

At TDV Profile, we have been supplying the world’s leading manufacturers of stainless steel and nickel alloy filtration media for many years.

A Geometry Designed for Efficient Filtration

wedge wire features a triangular cross-section: the narrow edge faces the flow to be filtered, while the wider base is positioned at the rear. When these wires are assembled side by side, they create precisely controlled slots whose width determines the size of the particles retained.

The key advantage lies in the wire’s tapered profile. Since the slot is narrower at the surface than inside the screen, any particle that passes through cannot become trapped and flows freely. As a result, wedge wire screens are far less prone to clogging than conventional mesh screens, are easier to clean, and maintain a consistent flow rate over time.

From Flat Screens to Cylindrical Filter Elements

Once manufactured, wedge wire is welded onto support rods to create a rigid filtration structure. Depending on the application, it can be formed into flat panels, cylinders, tubes, baskets, or well screens used for water intakes and wells.

Uniformity along the entire length of the wire is critical. Even the slightest variation in the profile can lead to inconsistent slot openings, resulting in a screen that no longer meets specification.

The Right Materials for Every Application

The choice of alloy depends on the operating environment, including chemical exposure, temperature, abrasion, and sanitary requirements.

We process a wide range of materials suited to these demanding conditions, including 304L and 316L stainless steels for water treatment and food processing, duplex stainless steels for enhanced corrosion resistance, and high-performance nickel alloys for the harshest environments.

These materials are used across a broad range of industries, including drinking water treatment, mining filtration, oil & gas production, pulp and paper manufacturing, and brewing.

Precision: The Key to Performance

A filtration screen is only as good as the wire it is made from. Slot width, nose and corner radii, dimensional consistency throughout the coil, and surface finish must all be tightly controlled from start to finish.

Even the smallest deviation can compromise the performance of an entire screen. Choosing a supplier capable of maintaining extremely tight tolerances is therefore not simply an advantage—it is essential for producing reliable filtration media.
