Compression springs, clips, spiral springs or fastening components: an increasing number of manufacturers are replacing traditional round wire with flat wire. At TDV Profile, we transform this wire through cold rolling for several spring and connectivity manufacturers across Europe. Why flat wire?

For the same overall dimensions, a flat wire spring provides greater force than a round-wire spring, thanks to a larger effective material cross-section. It also makes it possible to design more compact components with equivalent performance, a valuable advantage in the automotive and aerospace industries, where every gram and every millimetre counts.

The flat shape also provides a larger contact surface between the coils. The load is therefore distributed more evenly across the spring, reducing stress concentration points and improving fatigue resistance. As a result, service life is generally longer than that of an equivalent round-wire spring. Finally, flat wire offers greater resistance to torsion and better stability in service, a decisive criterion for constant-force springs or spiral springs, which simply cannot be manufactured from round wire.

Applications across numerous industries

Compression springs, spiral springs, constant-force springs, clips and fastening components: flat wire covers a wide range of components used in the automotive, electronics and connectivity, medical and household appliance industries. Each application has its own requirements in terms of load, fatigue resistance and available space, which requires precisely calibrated wire from the rolling stage onwards.

Our technical offering

Our range of stainless steel flat wire includes 1.4310 / 302, 1.4568 / 17-7PH, 1.4404 and 1.4407 grades. Controlled mechanical work hardening enables tensile strengths ranging from 1,300 to 2,200 MPa, depending on the required level. This rolling precision makes it possible to produce very fine wires, starting from 0.3 mm in thickness and up to a maximum width of 9 mm, while maintaining a consistent cross-section throughout the length of the coil, an essential factor for the reliability of the springs manufactured from it. We adapt production batch sizes to each customer’s requirements, from 50 kg to 10 tonnes. Our membership of the Walsin – Cogne – Novametal Group, with integrated raw material sourcing, enables us to guarantee spring and fastening component manufacturers complete traceability and consistent quality, batch after batch.
